WPS/PQR Manufacturing Services – The ultimate goal of a product creation process should always be to pay attention to results that are of high quality and can last for a long period of time. This applies to products made by multinational manufacturing companies, construction companies or even small companies/manufacturers which involve welding processes in them.

In order for welded products to consistently provide quality of the highest standards, a company should not rely solely on the welder/operator to simply guess the best way to complete a particular weld no matter how experienced the welder is.

Moreover, if the product being made receives pressure and excessive heat in it, such as pressure vessels and steam boilers. The company should provide a list of instructions and specifications for performing excellent welding in any situation. To maintain consistently high product standards, companies need to implement Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) for each type of welding performed.

WPS or welding procedure specifications are written documents regarding qualified welding procedures to provide direction to welders/operators in making welded products (production welds) in accordance with the requirements of the standards used (ASME Sec. IX).

WPS Variable.

There are at least 3 groupings of variables that influence the FSW qualification process.

  1. Essential Variables
    All variables that, if changed, will affect the mechanical properties of the weld result and require re-qualification of the WPS. For example, for SMAW welding, essential variables include changes to the base metal, such as changes in Thickness qualified, t pass > 13 mm, P number qualified, changes in filler metal such as F.Number, A-Number, Preheat, PWHT, and other techniques. using a hot process (QW. 253)
  2. Nonessential Variables
    Nonessential Variable is a type of variable which, if changed, does not change its mechanical properties so that it can be created in WPS without requalification. For SMAW welding, for example, connection type (change in seam design, root spacing), filler metal diameter, welding position, electrical characteristics (changes in current and poles), welding technique (manual/automatic, string/weave, cleaning method, multiple to single pass/ side) (QW. 253).
  3. Supplementary Essential Variables
    Variables that will become essential variables if the welding process requires a notch-toughness test or impact test. For SMAW welding, for example, changing the group number and T Limits toughness on the base metal, changing the diameter > 6mm as well as changing the classification on the filler metal, greater heat input / changing current and polarity, as well as multiple to single pass / side welding techniques (QW. 253 ).

WPS Creation Process

Initially, a preliminary WPS was made by the Welding Engineer referring to the standard/code used. WPS that have been created and are not yet qualified are then qualified using the Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) or procedure qualification record. To qualify for WPS, a test coupon is required which is welded by a welder following the variables listed in the WPS, then tested and the test results are expressed in the PQR.

PQR must be accurately certified by the relevant testing organization/laboratory. This certification is intended to be an organization’s verification that the information in the PQR is an actual record of the variables used during test coupon welding and that the process and results of tensile, bending, or macro tests (if required) comply with standard/code requirements.

If the PQR meets the value required by the referenced standard/code, then the WPS can continue to be approved by the authorized party (qualified) and ready to be used for production. A summary of the WPS qualification process can be seen in Figure 1.
